Shy Bairns Get Nowt – if you don’t ask, you don’t get

If you haven’t visited or don’t originally hail from the North East of England, you may be somewhat baffled by this phrase. In North-Eastern English dialect, ‘shy bairns get nowt’ is a well-known idiom that essentially translates to ‘shy children get nothing’.

Often used to encourage children (or adults) to speak up and have self-confidence, it’s a valuable truth that can be applied to many situations, including one’s career.
