Cars are available to purchase on Island with few restrictions on size. There are many reputable car dealers on Island selling used and new cars, or you may want to consider purchasing an ex-rental car directly from a rental company. Second hand cars are also available to buy directly from owners on Ecaytrade – Auto who will quite often negotiate on price. It is advisable to have the car fully inspected by a mechanic before purchasing. If buying off a dealer, please do your due diligence and find out if inspection, licensing and any kind of warranty is available.

Hybrid and electric cars are also available to purchase on island. There are multiple solar powered charging stations available throughout the island.

On arriving in Cayman you will be able to drive on your existing Driver’s License but only for a maximum of six months at which time you will be required to take and pass a written test to obtain a Cayman license.

You will not be able to complete the transfer of a car from another owner until you obtain car insurance. Driving without insurance is considered a serious offense in Cayman and can result in the loss of your license and a fine.

All vehicles on island are required by law to be inspected and licensed annually by the DVDL. Vehicle inspections are offered by most established mechanics on Island. Once your vehicle has been inspected and passed, you are required to renew the registration at the Vehicle & Licensing Department.

Bikes & Scooters:

Both bikes & scooters are popular on island. Again both are available from dealers and there are great second hand deals ecaytrade – motorcycles. Helmets are required to be worn at all times. If you are already licensed to drive a motorbike in your home country then it is simple process to change to a Cayman license.

  • Roads Rules and Speed Limits:
  • In Cayman you drive on the left hand side of the road.
  • Always drive around a roundabout in a clockwise direction and give way to traffic approaching from the right.
  • Turning left on a red light after a full stop is allowed and legal.
  • The rule for four-way stop junctions is that whoever gets to the four-way stop first, proceeds first.
  • The speed limit on the Island varies between 25mph-50mph. Be mindful to stay within the required speed limits to avoid incurring hefty fines.
  • It is illegal in Cayman to text or use a mobile phone (unless hands-free) while driving.

Bicycles

Cycling is a great way to keep fit and get around the island. There are several suppliers on Island that sell new bikes or there are some great deals on second hand bikes found on ecaytrade – bicycles.

Public Transportation

Cayman has a fairly reliable public bus system that offers seven bus routes. Each bus is marked to indicate which route it takes. The main bus depot in situated in central George Town and you although will find several designated bus stops throughout Cayman the best way to catch a bus is to simply flag one down from the side of the road. The usual fare is CI$2-CI$3.

Note: No buses run along South Church Street or South Sound Road.
