SteppingStones are assisting the Cayman Islands Humane Society in their search for a Shelter Assistant.

Job Description

Responsible for communicating with and supervising visitors, volunteers and staff as well as handling animals and helping out with animal care if needed. Working hours will be 7am – 4pm or 8am to 5pm five days a week including Saturday, plus every third Sunday. You will also be required to cover the emergency phone for out-of-hours assistance on a rotation basis, one week in three. The Shelter Assistant reports to the Shelter Manager.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Supervise and manage animal caretakers
  • Reception and community liaison
  • Promote fostering and adoption
  • Supervise volunteers and community service workers
  • Accept animals and check animals out, completing all required paperwork accurately and ensuring the animal’s welfare is protected
  • Help with the preparation of animals and paperwork for transfer overseas
  • Ensure biosecurity measures are followed at the shelter
  • Provide excellent customer service to community members in need of services and support
  • Follow up on community welfare cases including late payment of fees
  • Keep animal and people records up to date with any changes
  • Assist with ordering and stock control
  • Follow up on animal welfare and police reports
  • Errands including taking animals to other veterinary clinics and taking donations from the drop box at the shelter to the thrift store
  • Lock up at night
  • Cover emergency phone and animal pickups
  • To uphold the Cayman Islands Humane Society mission and promote its goals
  • Other tasks as required

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must speak very good English
  • Trustworthy and reliable
  • Can demonstrate an understanding of the importance of animal welfare and what constitutes good animal care
  • Experience of working with companion animals
  • Experience of providing good customer service in an animal care environment
  • Accurate and timely record keeping
  • Experience of managing staff
  • Willingness to uphold the shelters policies
  • Data entry experience
  • Able to use Microsoft Office
  • Must have a valid driving license and be at least 25 years old
  • Formal training in animal care is desirable

Applicants will be required to provide a clean police clearance and evidence of their immigration status as part of the interview process.
Preference will be given to Caymanian candidates and those with the right to work.
$10-$12 CI per hour
